Cross country on quest for more titles at ASUN Championships

Comments

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Lipscomb cross country squad is headed to Spartanburg, South Carolina on Saturday to defend its men’s and women’s titles at the ASUN Cross Country Championships.

The women’s team heads into the weekend having won five titles in a row, while the men have taken the last three conference championships.

“We don’t take anything for granted,” Lipscomb Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Bill Taylor said. “But, the women’s team is really strong.

“I think Jacksonville and North Florida are good teams. They’ll put up a fight, but we need to go do our job, and if we do that, then it should go well.”

Last season, the women tied the lowest mark in ASUN Championship history with 19 points and became the first team to ever land all nine runners on the All-Conference teams. They also broke the record for largest margin of victory at 54 points.

On the men’s side, the Bisons placed six on the All-Conference teams in 2015 and won with a team score of 22.

“Brent Leber’s been our leader all season,” Taylor said. “We’re redshirting our top three guys, so the guys are going to be in for a fight.

"We have a lot of young guys that are a little bit behind Brent. They need to move up, and if they do we’ll have a good performance for the guys too.”

The race is set to begin on Saturday with the women’s race at 7:30 in the morning, followed by the men’s at 8:30.
