Track and Field: Cajuns Start Action On Day One Of Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE Newcomer Jeryl Brazil posted a time of 21.86 seconds in the men's 200-meters to pace the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team during the first day of the 2015 Louisiana Classics on Friday at the Ragin' Cajuns Track and Soccer Complex.

The final day of action will begin on Saturday with field events scheduled for 9 a.m., followed by running events at 2 p.m. Live results will be available on RaginCajuns.com.

Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children aged 12 and under. Current UL students are admitted free with a valid University I.D. Parking for the meet will be in the grass lots along Reinhardt Drive across from the Ragin' Cajuns Track and Soccer Complex. Fans attending should enter through Gate 1 (Bertrand Drive and N. College Rd.).

Brazil, who posted a time of 10.60 in the 100-meters last week in his Louisiana debut, finished third overall in the 200-meters behind Mateo Edwards (21.63) of William Carey and Armanti Hayes (21.81) of Tiger Olympians. Freshman Bismarck Ebiweh (22.04) was 10th overall for the Ragin' Cajuns with Omari Davis (22.70) finishing 17th overall.

Kayla Thompson led the Ragin' Cajuns in the women's 200-meters after finishing ninth overall in 25.55. Alexandra Harrell (25.58) finished 10th overall for Louisiana in the event, with Jasmin Fusilier (15th, 25.81), Alena Hrusoci (16th, 25.86) and Caitlin Domingues (17th, 25.96) following.

In the men's 10,000-meters, Trey Bonin recorded a time of 34 minutes, 7.91 seconds to finish fourth overall in the race with teammate Sean Bezdek (34:37.33) finishing fifth.

Louisiana had four athletes earn top-10 finishes in the women's javelin led by Addie Shafer, who finished fourth overall at 131-3. Chelcie Sonnier (129-10) was fifth for the Ragin' Cajuns and was followed by Amber Sharp (6th, 129-7) and freshman Madison Meche (7th, 126-4).

Freshman Bartul Basic posted a throw of 197-8 and earned a fourth-place finish in the men's javelin for Louisiana. Cody Nickel (6th, 184-2) and Josh Cecil (9th, 171-11) each earned top-10 finishes for the Ragin' Cajuns.
