Two Compete At NCAA West Regional For TrackPublished by
LAWRENCE, Kan. Eastern Illinois track and field had two athletes in action on Friday at the NCAA West Regional as the Panthers along with a host of other schools battled the elements during severe weather in the Midwest. Haleigh Knapp and Riley McInerney both had their 2016 seasons come to an end on Friday at the University of Kansas. Knapp just missed on becoming only the third EIU women's athlete in the NCAA Division I era to advance to the NCAA National Championships. The sophomore was in a three-way tie for 11th place with the top 12 competitors in the regional advancing to Eugene, Oregon. Knapp was the odd jumper out during a jump off against Liz Harper of Washington State and Reka Czuth of Nebraska. Knapp cleared 5'9.25" and officially placed 13th. During the season she won both the Indoor and Outdoor Ohio Valley Conference Championships in the high jump setting both the EIU and OVC record in the event during both seasons. McInerney placed 22nd during early running of the men's steeplechase posting a time of 9:12.73 competing in the second heat. As the final heat of the day was preparing to begin, the meet was postponed until later this evening when the third and final heat will be contested. The top 12 runners in the event advance to the NCAA National Championships in Oregon. During the season McInerney posted the fourth fastest steeplechase time in school history at the Indiana State Gibson Invite. He placed third in the steeplechase at the OVC Championships winning a bronze medal. Brion Portis will compete for the EIU women's team on Saturday afternoon in the triple jump.
