Detroit Men, Youngstown State Women Claim Back-to-Back #HLXC Titles

KENOSHA, Wis.—In an exciting day of racing at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wis., the Detroit men’s and Youngstown State women’s teams were crowned as Horizon League Cross Country Champions, respectively.

The Youngstown State women’s cross country team garnered its second-straight Horizon League Championship, winning with 71 points. However, it was UIC senior Tess Ehrhardt who broke the tape at the finish line to win her second-consecutive Horizon League Championship individual title and Athlete of the Year honor, closing out the 6K in a time of 21:09. Ehrhardt led the pack throughout the race and surged the final kilometer to win by 11 seconds.

Leading the way for the Penguins was Anna Pompeo, who finished runner-up with a time of 21:20. Joining Pompeo on the First Team All-League was teammate Michelle Klim who finished in seventh place. Second Team All-League honoree McKinsie Klim placed 13th for Youngstown State while Brittany Stockmaster (22nd) and Elizabeth Rogenski (26th) also contributed to the team’s score total. In addition, head coach Brian Gorby was named Women’s Coach of the Year.

Milwaukee collected 84 points the team runner-up trophy with First Team All-League and  fourth-place finisher Leah Holmes leading the way for the Panthers. Teammate Annette Lemanski took 14th overall for Milwaukee and joined the Second Team All-League.

Oakland finished close behind in third place with 89 points followed by UIC with 93 to claim fourth. Detroit took fifth place and was led by Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-League member Sydnie Fetherolf who placed 10th overall in a time of 22:24.

Valparaiso finished the race with 134 team points to take sixth place while Wright State (145) and Green Bay (184) rounded out the team finishes.

The Detroit men’s team collected its second-straight Horizon League title with 59 points, just outscoring runner-up Milwaukee’s total of 57. The Panthers’ Marcus Paulson was first to cross the finish line to collect the individual title and Athlete of the Year accolades finishing the 8K with a time of 24:39.

The Titans placed two runners on the First Team All-League with Colin Creagh’s runner-up performance with a time of 24:45 and Ben Kendell’s fifth place finish in 24:55 that also earned him Freshman of the Year honors. Second Team All-League members Ryan Leahy (13th) and Derek Gielarolwski (14th) scored for Detroit as well as 23rd-place finisher Austin Wigent. Detroit’s head coach, Guy Murray, collected Men’s Head Coach of the Year.

Paulson’s teammate Caleb Abfall took sixth-place for the Panthers to join him on the First Team All-League while Adam Schueller (11th) and Tony Sustachek (12th) were named to the Second Team All-League. Milwaukee closed out its scoring with Alan Burns’ 20th-place finish.

Youngstown State took third-place on the men’s side with 66 points followed by Oakland’s score of 77 in fourth. Austin McLean was in the front of the pack for the Penguins with his third-place finish in a time of 24:52 while Nathan Ziolko of Oakland placed seventh in a time of 25:05 to round out the First Team All-League.

UIC was fifth with 86 points led by Kyle Hauser claiming fourth-place overall and Alex Bashqawi crossing in eighth. Valparaiso came in sixth with 192 with Green Bay close behind tallying 194 points to take seventh. Wright State rounded out the team finishes with 240 points.

The Horizon League cross country teams will compete at either the Great Lakes Region Meet in Madison, Wis. or the Midwest Region Meet in Peoria, Ill. on Friday, November 14th. The Great Lakes Region will run on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course while the Midwest Region will race on the Newman Golf Course. The teams will then await the announcement of the field for the NCAA Championships on Saturday, November 15th. The NCAA Championships are set to take place Saturday, November 22nd in Terre Haute, Ind.
