SACRAMENTO, Calif. Junior middle distance standout Jesse Garn took part in the U.S. National Track & Field Championships on Thursday evening in Sacramento, running in the quarterfinals of the 800. He placed sixth in his heat with a time of 1:50.80. The top three finishers in each of the four heats, as well as the next four fastest times advanced to Friday’s semifinal round.

Tonight was a tough run for Jesse, but we are really proud of him advancing to this meet,” assistant track coach Annette Acuff said. “This will really help prepare him for the big meets he will run in the next two years.”

Garn, who redshirted during the recent outdoor track season, was named the men s Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the America East Indoor Championships Feb. 23-24. He won the 1,000 and anchored the first-place distance medley relay team. On Feb. 14, he competed in the famous Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games.

His signature race, however, came on March 1 when he broke four minutes in the mile to win the Boston/Last Chance Meet. Garn’s time of 3:59.37 just missed the qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Track Championships.

In 2012, Garn placed third overall in the 800 at the U.S. Junior National Track & Field Championships. As a freshman and sophomore, he also advanced to the NCAA East Regional Outdoor Meet and was a finalist both years (in the 800 in 2012 and in the 1,500 in 2013).

Heading into the 2014-15 academic year, Garn has one season of cross country eligibility remaining as well as two full track seasons (both indoor and outdoor).

Garn is the third Binghamton track & field athlete to compete at a U.S. National Championship. Rory Quiller took part in the 2008 and 2011 indoor meets while Erik van Ingen ran in the 2011 outdoor championship.

NOTE: Since Garn was redshirting during the 2014 outdoor track season, he ran unattached at the W.C. Henderson Invitational.
