D1 XC Regional Results/Recaps 2014

West - Results

Men - Korolev (29:33) outkicks Cheserek (29:35) and Jenkins (29:39) for win.  No one pushed the pace and there was a large pack for most of the race. Oregon wins with 60 to 71 for Portland, 97 for Stanford and 104 for UCLA.  UW is fifth with 139.  All five should make NCAA meet.  Oregon goes 2-3-17-18-20 (28-57).  Interesting for Oregon is Winn 17th (29:55) and Neuman 20th (29:57). Portland was 4-9-10-14-34 (39-53). Stanford was 1-6-21-29-40 with expected absence of McGorty. Individual Qualifiers were Chris Walden (29:40) in 5th and Ryan Herson (29:46) of ASU in 8th.

Women - Houlihan (19:31) beats Bates (19:34), Cranny (19:45) and Knights (19:59) as Houlihan and Knights are likely individual qualifiers.  #2 Oregon (88) wins team title ahead of #20 Boise State (103), #9 Stanford (103) and #14 UW (131), UCLA 176, Cal 177. Oregon 11-13-18-22-24 with new #1, Grabill.  Oregon did not run Neer or Baxter.  Boise State 2-5-28-30-38.  Stanford 3-10-16-21.  Stanford, UW and UCLA are likely at-large teams 

 

Mountain Region - Results

Men - #1 Colorado (45) beats #2 Northern Arizona (60) and Zienesellassie of NA (29:48) is runner-up to Anthony Rotich (29:39) of UTEP. Final results are delayed due to 5 runners finishing together. Colorado finishes 4-7-9-12-13.  Northern Arizona finishes 2-5-14-17-30, as #4 is Byrne in by far his best race of the year after finishing 29th at the 2013 NCAA meet.  Weitz did not run for NA. BYU (121), Southern Utah (126) and Colorado State (140) will get at-large.  UTEP (156) and New Mexico (158) were closing to missing but they will likely be among the last qualifiers. Bowen of Wyoming (29:56) finished 6th and Turner of Montana State finished 15th in 30:09 and are the likely individual qualifiers.

Women - #12 Colorado (43) beats #8 New Mexico (56) with BYU following (112).  Alice Wright led New Mexico (20:51) ahead of Erin Clark of Colorado (20:56).  BYU is likely left out but they will have two individual qualifiers, Andrea Harrison was fourth in 20:57 and Carrie Jube was fifth in 21:00.  Colorado went 2-7-9-12-13 (16-36) with Sara Sutherland debuting in 7th.  New Mexico went 1-3-10-18-24.  

 

Great Lakes - Results

Men - John Mascari of Indiana State wins men's race (30:07) as Schrobilgen leads #10 Wisconsin to title (61) ahead of (also considered) Michigan State (82), #13 Michigan (94) and #18 Indiana (126).  Michigan and Indiana should join Wisconsin and Michigan State at the NCAA meet. Matt McClintock of Purdue will get the other individual spot.

Women -  Leah O'Conner/Rachel Schulist (19:44) lead #1 MSU to 28 points! #7 Wisconsin is second with 82 and Toledo holds off #6 Michigan for third with 133-137 and #19 Ohio State scores 155.  Toledo probably qualifies along with Michigan and Ohio State. Notre Dame is sixth with 195 and may make it.  Two runners from Eastern Michigan will likely make it as individual qualifiers, tenth place Victoria Voronko and eleventh place Sofie Gallein.

 

Midwest - Results

Men -  Erassa (30:09.6) takes individual title to lead Cowboys to vicotry (63) over Tulsa (77).  Iowa State finishes third with 110 and Minnesota fourth with 128.  Sam Penzenstadler of Loyola (30:11.6) and will get individual spot along with Brogan Austin (6th) of Drake (30:16) as Minnesota and Iowa State are likely to join Oklahoma State and Tulsa at NCAA meet. 

Women - Courtney Frerichs of UMKC wins individual title ahead of Teschuk of North Dakota State as they take individual spots. #5 Iowa State goes 4-5 and takes team title.  Iowa State gets 4-5-13-14-30 for 66 and Minnesota scores 125 to qualify for the NCAA meet for the 10th straight year.  

 

South Central - Results

Men - Kebenei (29:08) and Lutz (29:13) lead their teams to automatic spots.  Arkansas (42) and Texas (51) easily run away from Lamar (106) and the rest.  Lamar's Sam Stabler (29:39) and Houston's Brian Barraza (29:41) get the individual spots.  Arkansas goes 1-5-6-9-21 and #5 runner fell way back and #6 moved up 12 spots to get the victory.

Women - #3 Arkansas 29 beats #23 Baylor (82) with Scott taking the win (19:43) ahead of Johnson (20:04). SMU is third with 113.  Arkansas goes 1-4-6-7-11 as #2-#5 split is :20.  Sjostrom was third for SMU and if team does not make NCAA, she is an individual qualifier.  Roper of Rice will qualify and possibility of Montgomery of A&M qualifying as an individual

 

Northeast - Results

Men - #3 Syracuse (45) edges #17 Providence (48) and #9 Iona (60) as Byrne (30:26) of Iona takes individual title. Kevin Dooney of Yale was third (30:30) and Jack Boyle of Columbia was 13th (30:39) and are likely the individual qualifiers.  Syracuse used pack running to finish 6-9 and 15, Providence finished 2-4-5-14-23, Iona ran 1, 10-12, 26

Women - Kate Avery (19:47) leads Iona (91) as Friar women (128) qualify for NCAA meet. Syracuse (154) makes it difficult on themselves by finishing in fourth behind Dartmouth (136).  Boston College was fifth (180) and they were barely ahead of New Hampshire (183).  Lauren Sara of Connecticut (20:13) finished third and Kira Garry of Yale finishing 11th (20:30) qualified as individuals. 

 

Mid-Atlantic -  Results

Women - Katrina Coogan takes the title for  #4 Georgetown.  At two Miles #11 West Virginia led with 57, Princeton 63, and Georgetown 74.  Georgetown finished well (38) and won over West Virginia (42), Princeton (125) and Villanova (128).  Megan Curham of Princeton finished fourth in 20:28 and Morgan Szekely of La Salle was fifth in 20:34

Men - #8 Villanova wins with 41, #11 Georgetown 2nd with 74, #20 Penn State third with 87 ahead of (also considered) Princeton with 88.  Fischer of Penn State takes the title (30:16) ahead of Tiernan (30:20) and Thomas Awad of Penn (30:21). Villanova goes 2-4-7-13-15-16.  1-6 :13. It is unlike Penn State and Princeton qualified.  Fischer and Awad are the likely individual qualifiers.

Southeast Region - Results

Men - #22 Virginia edges #23 Furman 75-79 with #14 North Carolina third with 87 and #19 Eastern Kentucky fourth with 107. Luis Vargas of Elon (30:05) wins title ahead of Kibichiy of Louisville (30:13) as they qualify individually.  North Carolina and Eastern Kentucky will likely at at-large bids in this extremely tough region.

Women - Carol Hennssey (2nd in 20:14.7) leads (also ranking considered) William and Mary (74) to the region title.  Annie LeHardy of #10 North Carolina (20:13.7) wins the title for the Tar Heels (94) and leads them to a third place finish. Virginia (82) takes the other automatic spot behind 3-4 finish of Virginia's top two runners.  Virginia Tech (97) finished fourth ahead of #24 NC State (106).  NC, Virginia Tech and NC State are likely to be at-large selections. Allie Buchalski of Furman finished 9th (20:35) and Kayla van Graan of Coastal Carolina finished 10th (20:35). Buchalski and van Graan will likely qualify as individuals.  

South Region   - Results  

Men - Mississippi can't pass Arkansas at SEC but takes Florida State at South Region.  The Rebels (52) put #1-#3 between FSU (94) #1 and #2    Ty McCormack of Auburn wins in 30:08.30 on 9981m course.  Mississippi and FSU are likely only two to make NCAA meet.  McCormack and Austin Whitelaw of Tennessee are the only two individual qualifiers.  There is a small chance Auburn qualifies (106)

Women - #13 FSU #2 and #3 runners sandwich Vanderbilt #1 but #17 Commodores (52) pack running (#1-#5 :22 sec separation, finishes 6-14) carries out tight victory over Seminoles (53) as #4-#5 way back for FSU.  Colleen Quigley dominates in 19:17 on 5875m course.  Vanderbilt and FSU are likely only representatives at NCAA meet. Runner-up Chelsea Blaase and Bronze winner Rhianwedd Price are the individual qualifiers
